The Art of Interrogation: A Serial Killer Confesses
Special Agent Jeff Rinek was known within the FBI as someone who was particularly adept at getting criminals to confess: from murderers to terrorists to hardcore child predators. He is perhaps best known for getting a serial killer named Cary Stayner to confess in extraordinary detail to the murders of four women and girls in Northern California: a string of sexually-motivated killings known as the Yosemite Murders, one of the cases outlined in his recent book In the Name of the Children. The confession was all the more remarkable in that Rinek's FBI superiors had wrongfully arrested others for Stayner's crimes, leaving him free and clear to kill again.

Rinek will play excerpts from the confession and show crime scene photos of the evidence the killer led them to, allowing the audience to follow along minute by tension-filled minute, as the process of obtaining a confession unfolds before their eyes. Amateur sleuths and true-crime aficionados will be amazed by the astonishing amount of detail and self-reflection Rinek was able to elicit from Stayner about the evolution of a serial killer, getting him to talk about the impulses that drove him, the twisted and very specific fantasy that took root inside him at an early age, the evolution from fantasy into a concrete kidnap and murder plan, the steps he followed to make it a reality, and the study and preparation he took to try to avoid getting caught. The presentation will illustrate Rinek's unorthodox and humanistic approach to interviewing suspects, an approach with which he has had much success despite it being the almost polar opposite of the Reid Technique taught and used in most law enforcement agencies. Rinek will also describe how fraught with peril the interrogation process can be and how he managed to overcome the seemingly impossible-to-navigate terms Stayner demanded in exchange for confessing.

Behind "The Staircase"
Behind “The Staircase” with David Rudolf
After Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of the staircase in her Durham, NC home in 2001 her husband, Michael, was arrested and charged with her murder. What’s followed is 18 years of dramatic twists and turns that no one could have seen coming.

The subject of a documentary (The Staircase, which originally aired in 2004 as a French series of a different title, was updated in 2013, then again in 2018 when it was picked up by Netflix and gained wide attention), the legal case is extraordinarily compelling and has spawned countless theories, not to mention endless dinner table fights around the country.

David Rudolf, who acted as Peterson’s defense attorney in the original trial, and has been on an international tour discussing the case, will take attendees behind the cameras, through the key evidence, and inside the story that has compelled true crime fans everywhere.
(If you have a question for Mr. Rudolf please email it to us in advance at: questions@crimecon.com using subject: Staircase).

Note: “The Owl Theory,” which supposes that Kathleen’s death may have been caused by a bird of prey, will be discussed in greater depth by the theory’s founder, attorney Larry Pollard at 4:15p on Friday in Breakout 1.

Don’t know the Peterson case? Catch up HERE.

The Black Dahlia: A Case Study
On January 15, 1947, the tortured, bisected body of a 22-year-old woman was discovered in a vacant lot in Los Angeles. Arguably America’s most famous unsolved murder, Professor Anne Redding uses her 30-plus years of experience researching this case to separate fact from fiction by focusing on the Victimology of Elizabeth Short (a.k.a., The Black Dahlia) and analysis of Erotophonophilia (lust murder).

Drawing from official, original documents, the trappings of “whodunit” are set aside for a factual account of the life and tragic death of Ms. Short.

Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski was purportedly responsible for over 200 murders over his life, both as a Mafia contract killer and as a ruthless, unforgiving man who killed for any perceived slight. By filtering Richard's childhood through the Violentization Process, it is possible to see how his violent identity as an adult was created by his exposure to abuse and violent role models growing up. 20/20 Presents: Murder in the OC: From Crime Scene to Conviction
ABC News’ Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman sits down with Matt Murphy, Senior Deputy District Attorney for Orange County, California’s Homicide Unit, for an inside look at some of Southern California’s highest-profile trials.

Murphy, who has tried over 200 cases since joining the DA’s office, including the one that inspired the podcast and TV series Dirty John, hasn’t lost a case in more than two decades and has never lost a homicide case. Gutman is a multi-award winning correspondent covering, among a variety of assignments, a number of these gritty crime stories prosecuted by Murphy. Gutman gives a behind-the-scenes account of his dogged investigative reporting for “20/20” including what it’s like to uncover breaking news on-the-ground, conduct a jailhouse interview and work with victims’ families who want their voices to be heard.

48 Hours “Guilty Until Proven Innocent”: The Battle To Clear Darryl Pinkins And Roosevelt Glenn
When 48 Hours correspondent Maureen Maher first met Darryl Pinkins he was in prison for a crime he claimed he did not commit. Maher says she had met a lot of prisoners who claimed to be innocent but Pinkins was different.

Maureen Maher and 48 Hours producer Judy Rybak were there to see Darryl Pinkins released from prison on April 25, 2016. They watched as the District Attorney, who had fought for 25 years to keep him behind bars, apologized and told Maureen that he was wrong. Then, weeks later, the call came that Darryl’s co-defendant Roosevelt Glenn had been exonerated as well. Glenn had served 17 years behind bars.

How did it get to that? When Maureen sat down to interview retired Detective Mike Solan about the role he played in sending two innocent men to prison she wasn’t expecting a fight, but that’s what she got. Despite the fact that both men’s names had been cleared Solan still thought he was right -- and Maureen was forced to push him for answers.

Come hear Maureen, Darryl and Roosevelt share their personal experiences and observations of this history-making case, and get inside information about Maureen’s interviews with the people who put these men behind bars.

Dialogue with a Deviant: The Final 29 Days
CrimeCon superstar speaker Dr. Kimberlie Massnick will  focus her presentation this year on another sexual sadist, "Classified Ad Rapist" and serial killer: Bobby Joe Long,  who murdered at least eight women in Florida, and his victims.

Dr. Massnick has been communicating with Long for the past year and was recently was notified that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed Long's death warrant, with an execution date set for May 23, 2019.

Over the past year Long has asked Dr. Massnick to visit so that he could buy her a chipotle-bacon cheeseburger from commissary. He's also requested pictures of her posed in various outfits, specific positions and wearing red lipstick…none of which she ever sent.

Dr. Massnick believes that Long wanted her to recreate images that mimicked his victims. His requests were clear indicators of his need to continually victimize women. His greatest request was for her to someday attend his execution. And although it's long overdue for his victims and their families, Dr. Massnick had no idea that "someday" would possibly come prior to CrimeCon.

Leading up to CrimeCon, Dr. Massnick will release four episodes of her podcast dedicated to the victims of Bobby Joe Long. Her CC presentation will focus on her correspondence with Long and the rollercoaster of thoughts and feelings that she has, and will continue to experience, in the final 29 days of her interactions with this convicted serial killer.

The NYPD Cannibal Cop Case: Conspiracy vs Free Speech
Gil Valle rose to infamy in October 2012 and became known to the world as the NYPD "Cannibal Cop" after he was arrested for allegedly plotting to kidnap, cook, and eat women. These "plans" were formulated on a fetish website between people who never communicated in real life, and it was later found that these were not real plans at all.

Valle has since been exonerated, but his case remains in the forefront of a debate over the First Amendment, Internet privacy, and "thought crimes." When, if ever, does a thought without any real action cross the line into criminal behavior and when are the civil rights of an American citizen violated?

If you are interested in a deep-dive into a complex legal issue that will only get more commonplace in the years ahead then please bring your (respectful) questions and join in the conversation.

Ed. Note: If you are interested in getting up to date on the case and issues prior to the Con consider watching the HBO doc Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop.

48 Hours "Death in Dark Water": An Exclusive Look into the Natalie Wood Death Investigation
For the last eight years, 48 Hours has been investigating this case and searching for the truth -- was Natalie Wood’s drowning death in November of 1981 an accident or something more sinister? That fateful trip on the family yacht has become an enduring mystery -- what really happened to one of Hollywood’s most glamorous movie stars? When investigators decided to break their silence, it was to Erin Moriarty and the 48 Hours team of Liza Finley and Ryan Smith. They explained for the first time why they believe actor Robert Wagner, Natalie’s husband at the time, is a person of interest in the case.

The police investigation is still open. So is the less formal inquiry led by Natalie Wood’s sister, Lana. In an exclusive presentation that will be recorded for a podcast, Lana and Erin will discuss new information about the case. Cold Justice with Kelly Siegler, Steve Spingola and Tonya Rider, presented by Oxygen
In this panel, the Cold Justice team – Kelly Siegler, Steve Spingola and Tonya Rider – will go behind the tape and talk about the cases they will never forget, what drives them to uncover the truth and how circumstantial evidence is not a dirty word.

Cold Justice follows veteran prosecutor Kelly Siegler who partners with seasoned detectives to dig into murder cases that have lingered for years without justice. Together with local law enforcement from across the country, the Cold Justice team has successfully helped generate approximately 40 arrests and 19 convictions.

From Siegler’s successful track record in the courtroom and Spingola’s work on the Dahmer case to Rider’ experience as a detective on sexual assault cases, they each bring their own perspective and experience to these unsolved cases as they reinvestigate to help solve these tragic homicides.

Duped: Why We Love Liars, Imposters, and Scammers
Secret lives are all around us. Flip on the TV or surf the web and tales of gross betrayal will assault you: The highly respected Wall Street financier operating a billion dollar Ponzi scheme. Or “Family values”-preaching politicians who solicit men in airport bathrooms. While leading a double life would seem to be the exclusive province of psychopaths, spies, secret agents and undercover operatives with indeterminate accents, plenty of seemingly ‘normal’ people—both men and women--keep extraordinary secrets from the people closest to them.

In this session, journalist Abby Ellin, the author of "Duped: Double Lives, False Identities and the Con Man I Almost Married,” talks with professor and filmmaker Kelly Richmond Pope, PhD about why we love fraudsters so much.  Why are we so obsessed with these stories? Why do we give the perps a pass but look down on their victims? Is it possible to detect when someone is lying? And why are smart people so easily fooled? "Abducted in Plain Sight:" Behind the Scenes
Abducted in Plain Sight was one of the most watched true crime films on Netflix this year. It not only caused lots of frustration from viewers with how the story unfolded, but it also sparked necessary conversations about a of important topics.

This session, which features Jan Broberg (the young girl featured in the story) and director Skye Borgman, will include clips from the film and an open Q&A with the audience. Broberg and Borgman will dive deeper into the topics of grooming an entire family, and how most perpetrators are people that we know, love and trust. The two will look at how an abuser often diverts attention from their actions in order to continue their behavior and will also talk about forgiveness and what it really takes to heal, find happiness, and move forward.

Read more about Skye & Jan at CrimeCon on page 6 in Issue 4 of CrimeConfidential.

Framed: The Wrongful Conviction of Reginald Adams with Innocence Project New Orleans
Reginald Adams was wrongly convicted, twice, by New Orleans police and prosecutors for a murder he did not commit. When Innocence Project New Orleans reviewed his case it became clear he had been framed. With the help of pro-bono counsel, Mike Magner, they developed a complete picture of what was done to Reginald and relatively quickly won his complete exoneration. Olivia Grey Pritchard, through her dedicated online blog, had independently begun advocating for Reginald.

This interactive panel will hear from Reginald about the experience through two trials, 34 years of wrongful imprisonment, and the challenges since. Emily and Mike will discuss the process of reviewing and successfully pressing Reginald’s case to the New Orleans District Attorney. Olivia will discuss – from a lay-advocate’s perspective – the efforts that she and her mother had undertaken on Reginald’s behalf and how they worked with the IPNO lawyers after Reginald had counsel. Emily and Mike will address wrongful convictions more generally and the review process that IPNO and similar organizations undertake on old cases of potentially innocent prisoners. The panel will then address the systemic causes – beyond specific evidence-based mistakes--of tragedies like that which befell Reginald Adams and what we can all do to prevent wrongful convictions. There will be plenty of time for audience questions and discussion.

Dr. Henry Lee: New Concepts in Homicide Investigation
For centuries, police relied on interrogation, informants, and confessions to solve crimes. Contemporary law enforcement greatly expanded its ability to solve crimes by the adoption of advanced investigation techniques, forensic evidence, and investigation of the crime scene. Today, analysis of physical evidence, the search of databases, and reconstruction of the crime scene often can solve crimes.

Knowledge of forensic evidence is not only crucial in criminal investigations and prosecutions, but it is also vital in civil litigations, major man-made and natural disasters, and the investigation of global crimes. The success in solving cases is based upon a big database system integrated with six elements: the crime scene, physical evidence, witness, public information, data searching, and intelligence. This new investigative concept emphasizes teamwork, traditional detective work, public support, and advanced investigative skills (such as GPS positioning, cell phone tracking, video recording analysis, artificial intelligence, and data mining), and the ability to process a crime scene properly by recognizing, collecting, preserving and reconstructing all relevant physical evidence, plus, the analysis of forensic evidence.

Besides addressing the policy and practice of transnational crimes, Dr. Henry C. Lee will address examples of international cooperation and the utilization of the new forensic techniques, including: Image Recording & Enhancement, DNA genetic profiling, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Timeline Analysis, Records Tracking & Verification, Crime & Geographic Mapping, Cloud big database, artificial intelligence, Crime Scene Reconstruction, Investigation Information Theory and new Forensic Technology. Case examples, such as RI serial killer, wood-chipper murder and Chicago mass killer, etc will be used to illustrate the importance of the application of AI in a homicide investigation. Read about Dr. Henry Lee and some of his cases in issue 4 of CrimeConfidential on pg. 4.

Serial Killers Among Us with John White
Serial killers lurk in the shadows, constantly seeking their prey. Their minds are obsessed with thinking of new ways to commit unspeakable acts against others. Where does this evil originate? Are there really different types of serial killers? Are their brains different from yours? Do they have a common pattern to their killings? The answers might surprise you. This presentation by psychology professor, former investigator (and runaway hit 2018 CrimeCon speaker) John White will address these questions and more by using examples of sometimes-popular, sometimes-obscure serial killers so that you may better understand, and possibly detect, the evil that lurks among us.

THIS IS A VIP-ONLY EVENT. NO PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED BUT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLD OR PLATINUM VIP BADGE TO GAIN ADMISSION.

VIP's: Over the course of CrimeCon weekend you'll have had your case briefing, spent time in the crime scene, processed your evidence back in the lab, and sorted through the information. So, did you figure out what happened? Did you piece it all together?

Presented by the Houston Forensic Science Center, this session will provide the ending of the story. What actually took place the night of the murders, and how would a real CSI have put it together? 48 Hours "Fatal Crossing"
In 2008, a young pregnant mother, Kadie Major, and her 10-month-old daughter, River Lynn, were found dead alongside a remote section of railroad tracks in Moncks Corner, S.C. Kadie’s death was quickly ruled a suicide, but Kadie’s mother, Vicky Hall, never believed it. She embarked on her own 10-year investigation, collecting evidence and speaking to witnesses. She claims enforcement ignored her… until 48 Hours producers Liza Finley and Ryan N. Smith started an investigation of their own….

48 Hours’ investigation helped fuel a second look at the case which led to a breakthrough. The newly elected Sheriff publically stated that Kadie Major did not commit suicide. He also declared Kadie’s husband, Aaron Major, a suspect. The investigation is still ongoing. Aaron Major has not been charged with any crime.

Come hear Peter talk about this gripping case with Kadie’s mother, Vicky Hall, and private investigator Jessica Sanders.

Forensics 101, Presented by the Houston Forensics Science Center
The Houston Forensic Science Center is an independent crime lab created out of the scandals of what had notoriously been called by the New York Times the “worst crime lab in the country.” How do you rebuild from that reputation? What does independence look like in Houston’s crime lab and is that part of the success? Dr. Peter Stout, HFSC’s CEO, and president, will take the audience on a journey through HFSC’s five-year history, sharing the successes, the bumps in the road and the way forward.

Crystal Miller went to the Columbine High School library on April 20, 1999 not knowing that the next 7 ½ minutes would change her life forever.

Twenty years after the school shooting that stole the innocence of an entire generation, Crystal will close out CrimeCon 2019 with her story of fear, survival, and, ultimately, of triumph.

From the events of that day, huddled under a table with a classmate who said he’d take a bullet for her, to the years of nightmares and survivor’s guilt that followed, Crystal will take attendees through it all and answer your questions openly and honestly.

(If you have a question for Crystal please email it to us in advance at: questions@crimecon.com using subject: Crystal).

Crystal’s ultimate message: that despite the inevitable suffering we will all face in life, we can always choose hope over fear, is one that applies to almost every true crime story we read, watch, listen to, or are somehow involved in. That makes her the perfect way for thousands of us to close out CC19 and look ahead to CC20: optimistic, resolute, and determined to fight for victims, for justice, and for ourselves.
