Darryl Pinkins

I was born in Gary, Indiana on August 19, 1952, to Mildred and Braxton Pinkins Jr.
As a child, I attended Fredrick Douglass elementary school in Gary, Indiana. After that, I went on to attend Beckman Jr. High School, Tolleston High School, and West Side High School until my graduation in 1970

I took an interest in music at the beginning of my 7th-grade level and continued my interest throughout my high school career. I joined the marching band and became a percussionist and was assigned to play the drums. From my early beginnings, I took an interest in assisting and aiding others when the need for safety and guidance was involved. I started by becoming a "patrol-boy” in elementary school and went on to volunteer as a Sailor for the Armed Forces of the United States. While at the Bainbridge Maryland Naval base, I attended Radioman "A" School. Upon my discharge, under honorable conditions, I worked several jobs in the Steel Mills, located in Gary, Indiana and East Chicago Ind.

I was arrested for a crime that I didn't commit and found guilty in 1991. While incarcerated, waiting for justice, I obtained my Associate's degree and Bachelor's degree in General Education from Ball State University. I also received my certification as a Braille Transcriber and had my name and credentials entered into the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. I am a single father of two boys and two girls who are all fully grown now. I am currently working as an Urban Conservation team member, for the City of Gary. I am enjoying my experience with my current employment. I am a God fearing man, with a deep commitment to spiritually.
